Butcher

From the time that I was fifteen until I was twenty-three I was a meat cutter. Don't get me wrong, the job taught me some great skills but the first year or so was hell. When I began cutting meat I started on whole, hanging sides of beef, not the boxed product that is used today. As the low man on the Totem pole I was the one who had to take out the scraps to the rendering truck when it came each week. The problem was that the scraps sat in trash bags all week, getting more and more bloated by the day. When the truck finally came I had to carry the bags out, and cut them open and dump them into a loader. When the knife pierced the bags the rancid gas would spew into my face like somebody hitting me in the face with a bat. The first several weeks I would wretch terribly when the bags were punctured but with time I learned to control my breathing to breathe only through my nose but there was no getting around the smell when the bag would spew rancid liquid into your face when you punctured it. Eventually somebody left, and a new greenhorn was hired:) and I was spared, well at least from that task, there was still cleaning out the band saw, grease trap........so many wonderful things to be done.

Purpose of the blog

I've had, as i'm sure many of you have, some really bad jobs in my life and I just thought that it would be interesting to create a place where people can come to tell others about their crappy jobs:)
